Hey there! And welcome to the City Lights Podcast City Lights is a church located in the northwestern part of Richmond, Virginia. For more information about city lights you can visit us at we are city lights dot com Now enjoy today's message. Welcome to City Lights online. My name is Jacob and I'm on the team here, and I'm so glad it's you have tuned in to watch us this week. It is Palm Sunday, so we're super excited about that. With that being said, we are in a series called This Looks on certain This looks uncertain, and in our world today, isn't that a good word to describe how we feel? This looks uncertain. This isn't what's going on. Like, when are we gonna be back to a normal routine? Is that is that at the end of the month? Is it in June like this? Looks uncertain now, even for Jesus and his followers leading up to Easter. Things like my searching for them. Things look very uncertain. They didn't know how things were going Last week, we talked about how Jesus being, ah, 100% God and 100% human made it possible for him to relate to us. He's a personal god, relational God. And because he can relate to us, he can feel our pain. We saw in the garden on the mountain olives that he was. He was distressed. He had doubt he had a lot of things going on yet he chose God's plan for his life. And because of that, he provides peace for us. Salvation for us. Now I have a question. Have a question for you. You gonna answer it? No comment. I thought the person next to you have a question. Isn't it crazy how fast life can change light like, Isn't that just crazy? How life How fast life can change. Like Like I used to go to Starbucks regularly on the regular. And I can't remember the last time I went to Starbucks, man, like I'm missing that place. You know, like I've been I've been becoming my own. Um um, Restore around here. Tell me my own lot is going pretty good, actually. But but isn't it true, though, how fast life can change? And I think one of the problems we face when it comes to uncertainty, is that is our certainly makes it hard for us to navigate the changes that are happening. And then when there's so many changes happen in our lives, it makes it hard to find purpose. So so I think that's one of our things. So for most of us are routines or changed, work is changed. People that we see on a regular is changed, and change can be hard now. Imagine Jesus, the Imagine Jesus and his followers. Like I said today we celebrate Palm Sunday and which is the beginning of the Holy Week. And we see on Palm Sunday that Jesus and his disciples, Jesus tells his disciples. He tells him, Hey, if you can make a trip to Enterprise and rent out a donkey for me, that's a joke. There's no enterprises back then, Okay, Jesus said, Go get a donkey for me and I'm gonna ride this donkey into Jerusalem and and And the reason for that is actually was to fulfill a prophecy over the Messiah, you know, So there's really, really big big scene, and then we see this amazing scene as Jesus rides on a donkey into Jerusalem and check this out. Matthew, 21 says this start over seven. They brought the dunking the coal in place, the cloth on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their clothes on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that follows shouted Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Ho Zana in the highest. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up and asked, Who is this? See, This is a beautiful picture of King Jesus being praised being praised in the holy city and worship a humble king riding on a donkey, assuring in the Kingdom of God not with the wrath but with piece fast to begin another week. That's how the weak start is a good way to kick off your week. Fast forward to what we now call Good Friday. Jesus was betrayed by sneaky Judas. Jesus. Arrested. Peter denies him three times out. At one point, all 12 disciples abandoned him. Jesus beat and flogged. Jesus is hung on a cross, and it's easy to say right, is it crazy? to say how life can change so fast. Life contains in a second it feels like and sometimes it's hard to see the purpose cause how fast life can change. And this is the tension that Jesus feels. So if you're taking notes, are you thinking that you could title part two of this series? This isn't Disney World anymore. What the heck, How did you get from Jesus? The Disney World? It makes sense. This isn't Disney World anymore. That's part two of, uh, of our over Siri's. Now, in the comments below, let me know if you ever been to Disney World Disneyland. If you're in California, I guess our universal before now. Now I got to say, I love Disney World. Aaron and I were theme part people like we love it. We spend few vacations down in Orlando. Theme parks like this is my ideal vacation. Like I'm going to The beach is nice. A cruise. All that stuff is nice skin. I wouldn't do that, but But But for me, you know Disney World, Harry Potter world, like all those different places, like nothing beats it is awesome. Okay, so, Aaron, my wife, she's an expert vacation planner like she should do it as a side hustle. I think she did such a good job. So everything about everything about what she plans the trip is this amazing? Okay, so from the moment we get on the plane, that's when we land in Orlando. So when you get on the Disney Express like there's a whole bus that Disney owns like it's crazy, man, you get to the Disney Hotel and then you're sharing a room with fossil like like, man, this is like crazy, you know? So it was great. And you can walk around the part wearing mouse ears like, where else in life can I walk around places where mouse ears on my head. Like if I goto Food lion were in mouse ears, they'll call the cops on me. But in Disney World, mouse ears, Come on. They okay? You can do that, you know. You know, not now. Not here. You go. The only problem, the only problem with Disney World is this is when you have to leave Disney World. Now that's a problem. It's a problem. Okay, So last fall, we had a surprise two day trip down the Disney World, and it was pretty awesome. We were able to go because of Aaron's work. So we got the opportunity to bring Kingsley down when she was a little too young still, but she had a good time. She was confused why Mickey was walking around and regular people world. But she had a good time. And but also Aaron's mom and her sister came with this. So the trip was awesome. Way too short. But we had a great time. But on the way back. So our trip back from Orlando to Richmond, Aaron had to stay down in Orlando for the work event in a sheet that she went Thio and Sarah, her sister. She had to leave early because I think she's a secret agent or something like that. But anyway, so it's just me and Kingsley and my mother in law. We had to take this trip back. Not now. Luckily, my mother in law and I we actually you know, we get along. We don't have like that stereotypical, you know, whatever relationship with your mother in law. So it wasn't awkward for us to travel. The only challenge in partner going challenging part for both of us is that we both realize pretty heavily on errand to take care of Kingsley and kind of lead vacation, you know, like she's a vacation leader. So our first flight, our first flight from Orlando Thio Atlanta that one pretty good. You know, Kings. They didn't have a hard time there. That that went fine then. Then we we got on their flight from Atlanta to Richmond, and it has a whole nother story now. Now is way past kings these bad time. You know she she but she doesn't want to fall asleep. She's refusing to fall asleep on the plane for some reason. So she's sitting on my lap and she's a flapping just flopping around like a wild fish. Just flop it, flopping around everywhere and like that. She's not crying, so we weren't like those people on the plane with the crying baby. But But she does would not stay still. She wanted to keep getting up, no matter what show. I played no matter, and she did not want to sit down at all, and at one point she was so going so crazy she grabs my glasses and she throws him, she throws my glasses. Okay, at this point, I'm just frustrated. I'm tired. My mother in law, she's trying to calm Kingsley down, so I'm holding on her time. And that's what my mother always doing is working in the whole time. I'm thinking to myself, this isn't Disney World anymore. Like we are not in the magical kingdom anymore. You know, Finally we land. We going to get our luggage. We walked to the car on, I put Kingsley in the car, see, and she instantly falls asleep. Thank God that was good. Instantly fall asleep. Finally, I think all the craziness is over. I was gonna get in the car. We're gonna get back to the apartment, and then it's gonna be all good. Then I started to drive away, and I recognize that I can't see what's in front of me. Because in the plane Kingsley took Mikey took my glasses. And through them, So So I'm blind. I can't see now. Now if you know anything about my mother in law. Although, if you know anything, I'm about my mother in law. She gets a little high stress when it comes to driving on the interstate. Okay, so she gets pretty. She's pretty high stress man comes to driving on Interstate. And not only are we driving on the interstate with driving on Interstate in Richmond were from Virginia Beach. This is a brand new for us. I got new to the area. I don't even know really how to navigate the airport. T back. Get back to the West end. And so So I'm thinking, Oh, my gosh, You gotta be so stressful. This definitely ain't Disney World anymore. Disney World is peace and joy and happiness. This car ride home ain't about to be that so I'm literally sitting up as close as possible to the steering wheel, so I can't really see that. Well, And my mother in law, she has my phone and she's trying to navigate using the maps app. Don't know that how good she is with technology. But she did it. She's telling me where to go. And I think it was raining. I'm pretty sure it was raining and thunderstorm that night, too. I'm pretty sure maybe there's even a hurricane, but so I'm driving. The weather is bad, and I'm thinking on something This ain't Disney World. I want to go back to Disneyworld. This saying what I want anymore last week was better than this. Right now, you know. And then finally, finally we get home, we make it safe. Eventually we get there, But daring this time, I'm like, Please bring me back to Disney World might bring me back to that Bring me back because where I'm at right now wasn't where I want to be. My purpose is in Disney World, not here. Which leads me to my starting point, which leads into my starting point today. It's hard to see the purpose and this it's hard to see the purpose in this. And you know, you're in this, You know the thing that sure dealing with that is you're in this moment. Maybe it's the Corona virus. I mean, this is like, just keeps escalating at every every week, it feels like and everything changed so fast and it like one day we were going on their normal lives, and the next thing you know, things get closed and we got to stay home, and it's just things change fast. Maybe you have plans going, and now they're now they're canceled and you're in and things just feel so uncertain, you don't know what's going on. Maybe there's other changes in your life. Maybe there's things that happen that she won't expect it in your relationship on your career, and it's hard to navigate. The only way that you would describe it is it's hard to see a purpose in this. It's hard to see a purpose, which leaves me to my destination point today. But there is a purpose. Even in this. I want some people to hear that there is purpose even in this, even in this thing you're going through. Even in this struggle, there is purpose. Okay, now, now there was a study done on Disney World, you know, to continue with that survey, and they surveyed members or people who were at Disney World and every at every hour while they were at the part, they were asked them to rate how they feel right, their feelings from a scale of 1 to 10 so the average came out to about 6.5 doesn't look bad, But that's the average, how people felt. And a lot of that was because people were hot have you ever been in Orlando? Switched during the summer. It's hot, You know. The long lines is a lot of lines. And Disney, You know, if you have kids, your kids get tired, even though they're the most magical place. They're so tired. But when you ask people to rate their Disneyworld trip after it's all over, probably like a month or so later, most people will rate their experience of Disney World A nine or even a 10. They were on Lee radio as like the best trip they ever been on, even though it wasn't really a nine when they were in the moment. But afterwards it waas because now, after the trip is over, they have pictures they have. The memories they're thinking about is a small world after all, they got all the different things that they're thinking about, and I think this is true of change. I think this is true of how we feel about when we go from one season to a new season. I think when we enter into a new season of life, often times is easy for us to highlight the great memories of our past season, toe highly on when things are so much better. Back then, things were so greater back then. Oh, back in the day, things were better. And then we forget the struggles, though Sometimes we forget those struggles, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. You know, I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but but here's the thing. I want you to get bit. Before the Corona came and messed, everyone's schedule was shut off. Our normal lives down, there are things you were struggling with. There were other things that she was struggling with either. There were fears and insecurities and doubts. Maybe you're struggling with marriage problems or school problems. Relational problems, financial issues, parents and stressors. What whatever was going on there, which struggles, You know, obviously, what we're dealing with right now as a nation and as the whole world has gonna have long lasting effects and it is extremely difficult to navigate. Trust me, I've been on the side of just unknown on onshore a lot in this whole this whole time, and it's hard to see the purpose in it. At times it's hard to see the purpose and what's going on, but I want you to know there is purpose. There is purpose even of this. There is purpose in this cuz your purpose is not terminated because of life's uncertainty. So I wouldn't want you to get this, that your purpose is not terminated because of life uncertainties. These circumstances do not create your purpose. See, circumstances do not creature purpose. See if that was a case. If if your circumstances where the dictator of your purpose then one day your purpose would be over here and then the next day your purpose be over there and then over here and there. And if circumstances were the determining factor of our purpose, then our purpose will go up and down based on whatever is happening in our world. See, You see, I want you to know your purpose is not based on your circumstances. It is not based on what's going on. Is that based on the things that's happening? But your purpose can bring light to your circumstance. See, this is important for you to know your purpose. The reason why you're here, you would drive your grit, your desire, the reason why God designed you, Kim, bring life into the hard and tough and rough thing that you're dealing with right now, it can bring light to it and bring life to it. You may be like Jacob, What do you get is from How do you come to the conclusion that that my purpose isn't based on my circumstance are whatever you know it and I get it from from what we see in Jesus is Jesus tells us that Jesus tells us that our circumstances that are seasons do not determine the purpose that we have. What purpose could be brought in to our circumstances in our seasons? We see from the way that Jesus handle change the way Jesus handle tough circumstances. Jesus Rag early implemented his purpose and to hiss circumstances. He regularly did it. There's no better example of it than his death on the cross. Now, now, let's let's check this out. Jesus has been has been being an abuse, and we have to remember the cross in our culture, you know, it's kind of it's kind of a fashion statement, you know, but but the cross and that culture, I mean, that's the worst way to die. Why is that? It's embarrassing, is humiliated and means you're the worst of the worst kind of person is for the worst kind of criminal. This is the way that they choose into killed Jesus by crucifixion. But check this out. Once you get this is this is gonna be the main. The main verse that we look at today. Luke 23. 32. Says this. Two other men, both criminals. I want you to get this. Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there along with the criminals. Once it is right and the other to his left. Now, we don't know much about these criminal Luke. The gospel writer was really the only one that communicate this much detail about them. But based on what we know about crucifixion, these two guys, there's some bad guys. They're not good. There are not good guys. They've done some bad things. I want you to see something here. The text says that the two criminals were lead with him to the place called the school. They were led to him to the place called the school. Then Jesus was placed in the middle of them is he? Often times when they did crucifixion, the person I was in the middle was considered the worst criminal out of the three C. In times of hardship, in times of uncertainty, in times of pain, we see Jesus living out his purpose. So I want to encourage you with this. I want to encourage you. I want you to think, Think about this one so much encouraged. Courage with this walk out your purpose. Even in this walk out your purpose. Even in this, walk it out. If you guys start singing a song, I walk it out. Okay? You gonna do that right now? Okay, walk out your purpose. Even in this, even when things are hard, even when things are challenging even when you want to give up even when you don't understand what's going on you it's your time to walk out your purpose. It is not your Johnson run Is not your time to get out is your timeto walk out your purpose Now I won't be as practical as I can for you today. So here are two ways to ways that you could walk out your purpose even in this, even in this circumstances, To wastes for you to walk out your purpose. The 1st 1 is this. Remember your mission. Remember your mission you may like. Like most people, you don't have, like, a mission statement for your life. But you know, the thing inside you that that brings you passion, that that that that you love it is your family. If it is your your career, sort your vocation. If you know that thing that men, this is why I'm here. Like this is my mission, man. That now remember your mission. This was Jesus, mission and all the craziness that he's dealing with and all the uncertainties dealing with this was Jesus. Mission and picture perfect sequence and his cause. His mission was to bring those who were far from God near It's a guy said, Jesus says the time has come. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the good news. This was Jesus Mission. And here you go. It's impossible for humankind to be reconciled to God because of sin. It was impossible for Jesus mission to be complete because off sin sin separates humanity from God and here is Jesus. In this time of uncertainty where he may have had this filling up Is this really it? This is really my purpose. It's just really what I'm supposed to d'oh! And in all of this pain and all this trouble, we see him walk in to the cross. Not with perfect people, not with healthy people. But he walks to the cross with two criminals, two people who you would consider sick. Jesus had to remember his mission. Check this out. Look, 5 27 He says, Jesus, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting on his tax booth. Follow me, Jesus said to him, and leave. I gotta left everything and follow him. Then Levi held a great dinner for Jesus at his house. In a large crowd of tax collectors and others we're meeting with now I want I want a preference that tax collectors in that day me, they were the worst of the worst kind of kind of people. So Jesus is wining and dining in with a bunch of sinners like he's just hanging out with him hanging out with centers, and I just I love that about Jesus because because when you look at Jesus's life in the Gospels, like people who are far from God wanted to hang out with Jesus and people who and people who were near God didn't want to anything to do with Jesus, I'm just wondering. I'm wondering based on what I see in the Gospels. Are we reaching people the way that Jesus wants us to reach people on the way that he reached people? But he was, That's a side note. So so but hate. But it takes like a teensy says, but the heresies and the teachers of the law who belongs to who belonged to those that complaint to his disciples. Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? Jesus answered. I love it there talking to his disciples. But Jesus still approaches that Jesus answers. Answer them. It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. This is amazing. Is that Jesus mission now that were repent means to change your way. And Jesus came to bring those far from God close to God. Jesus knew his purpose was so bridged. The gap between God and humanity. He came for those who are in need spiritually, physically and now for you. I want you in this difficulty and this struggle. I want you to remember your mission. You have a mission here. And if you don't know your mission finding like like like this is your time to find it like this is your time to dig deep in the presence of the Lord. Is that God got? Why am I here? Got Show me my show Me my purpose. Show me my mission. Here is not your time to give up and cry and wind And it's okay to be frustrated is okay. To have have anger is okay. That's okay. Trust me is okay. But this is your time to remember why you're here. Remember your mission You may find yourself in this season of uncertainty may find yourself in disappointment are being discouraged. But the mission God has given you the thing that God has placed in your life. It has not stopped. Don't give up yet. Don't stop yet walking out in the second way the same way we can walk out Our purpose, even in this is if we dig deeper now, you gotta dig deeper now. Now, I've been on this journey for 10 years now trying to achieve hashtag h S B which stands for Hot Someone body. I ain't got it yet. I hit it yet, you know, maybe I haven't by this year because the beaches are going to be close. Maybe, but here you go. I used to I used to do this video workout called insanity. I won't. Have you ever seen the advertisement for It is insane. You got do all these crazy workouts and Shaun t the video instructor he would start yelling at you through the TV is like, dang how did he get through my TV? That's how it feels. He would start yelling at you through the TV when the when the workout. We hit his hardest part and he would say to you, when you're sweating, you don't want to do one more squat. You don't want to do one more mountain calm and basketball thing. All the crazy things that you had to do when you don't want to do one more thing, Shaun T will yell out, dig deeper. You gotta dig deeper. And I just wanna tell some people today you gotta dig deeper. Is your time to dig deeper? You may want to quit. You may feel you can't do it anymore You may feel you can't walk it out anymore You gotta dig deeper There's purpose in your life if they're still breath in your lungs And God is not done with you Okay? Fees at 3 20 tons is this. God can do anything you know, far more than you could ever imagine. Our guests are requesting the your wildest dreams. Check this out. He doesn't. Not by pushing us around, but by working within us. His holy spirit deeply and gently within us. See, God is bigger than the problems around you. You just gotta dig bigger. You gotta walk out your purpose. Even in this Jesus hung on a cross in between two criminals even though he was perfect even though he was sinless even though he had no fault to him. We see his purpose And in reality at this moment Jesus, the perfect sacrifice for two centers. You gotta walk it out Then when you see that once you see one more thing. Jesus doesn't show us that we can have purpose. Even in this, you got to speak out your purpose. Even in this, you got to speak it out. Speak out your purpose even in this look. 23 40 40 34 says Jesus said, Father, forgive them for they do not know whether doing this Jesus on the cross, just just hanging on a cross And he says Forgive them so they do not know what what what they're doing. Jesus, who knew no sin became sin. He spoke words grace like like like like if I could be honest, I could be really be real with you Like when I'm driving and people cut me off on the road like I lose my salvation. At that moment I want to start cursing people out, flipping the bird like like Jesus hanging from a cross. And he offers forgiveness to people like this is amazing. This is this is this is amazing. And then he got in. These Roman officials and religious leaders are standing in front of him. They take his clothes, they make fun of him first continues to says the people stood watching and the rulers even sneered at him. They said he saved others. Let him save himself if he is God's messiah, the chosen one. The soldiers also came up in Mott. Um, they offered him wine, Vinocur said, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. There was a There was a written notice above which read, This is the king of the Jews. They mocked him, joked him. Yet Jesus did not forget who he waas. And he spoke out his purpose, even forgive. They don't know what they're doing that. Then it gets crazier. You know me. I'm thinking you're crazier. Gets crazier in Verse 39 it says one of the criminals and Mommy has to criminals beside him. One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him. This guy next time is insulting, he says. Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself in us. But the other criminal rebuked him. Don't you fear God, he said, Since your honor, the same sentence, we are punished justly for what we are getting, what boat arsons deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong. Check this part out. Then he said to Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom for a moment. I want to focus on these two criminals. I want to switch over the focus. I want to focus on these two criminals. And I want to ask you in the face of uncertainty the face of the things that you're dealing with right now. Which one of these criminals aren't you? The criminals? Are you? Are you the one that says what you Jesus like? Save us? Save yourself like this guy. I understand this guy like like like Jesus, Usual Jesus powers. And get us out of this circumstance. Please. Now, be good. Be good right about now. But are you the other guy who says, Don't you fear God? What was he saying? That don't you trust God? Does your trust God even in this Jesus, Just remember me. I didn't get things right. A messed up. Don't forget me. Just remember me. See, this guy said, Jesus, I trust you. And don't forgive me two ways to speak out purpose. Even in this, the 1st 1 is this. Speak with godly confidence. At some point, I want you to start speaking with guided confidence in your circumstance. I need you to start speaking it on. I am not telling you to deny your pain on our fake it or whatever. I want you to authentically speak with godly confidence in your season. Start proclaiming God's truth over your life. So I saying, Jesus, I trust you. You're in this. Jeez, I believe in you. Even in this God I know you are with me. Even in this in the second thing declare the victory belongs to Jesus. Declare that in your life that the victory belongs to Jesus. And I want you to be honest and authentic. I want you to process your your emotions and your feelings. Bring your whole self to God. Bring all of you to God and end. That wants you to declare that Jesus you hold the victory. The victory belongs to you and your household. Speak love in life. The circumstances aren't changing anytime soon. Friends, this is This is where we're at right now. But even though the circumstances don't change, you can change the way you speak in the circumstance. You can change that right now. And if so what other words of Jesus? What are the words of Jesus went dealing with uncertainty. See, with his broken body and his swollen eyes. And this criminal says, Remember me and I want you to get something here. This isn't some justified man on the cross, this criminal. He deserves punishment. He deserves the cross. This guy lied and cheated, installed. He hurt people. He deserves to be in that cross. He deserves to die that way. But friends? One of the words of our savior. What are the words of King Jesus in this moment? Jesus looks. I haven't answered him and said, Truly, I tell you today you will be with me and paradise. See victory the logs to Jesus friends. Victory belongs to Jesus. He says that to that criminal, and he says that to me. And he says that to you today. Today you can be with me in paradise. You say it's a day you can have grace and your circumstance. You can have peace in your circumstance, he says. It looks are certain. But even in this there's purpose. I want to leave you with his last verse before closing prayer. As we get ready for Easter Sunday, check this out 23. 44 says. And it was now about noon. Darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. For the sun stop shining through the curtain. Another temple was 22. And check this out. Jesus caught out with a loud voice, Father, into your hands. I commit my spirit when he has said this he breathed his last breath. So I want to leave with that thought. Because what happens after Jesus? Death. But we know the story about resurrection. But what does that mean for you, even and this. But he hasn't made this price. God. God, we thank you. Can we thank you for you left? We thank you for your goodness. We thank you for your favor. God, we ask for more of you even right now there's some people who you're dealing with stuff even in this, even in this hardy, even in this challenge. And you know what you're even is like the Lord is saying that he is with you this purpose for you. Even when I hit the point of remember, your mission is people You don't know what your mission is. You don't know why you're here so come home. Come on. Was Rapper They dial down wherever they are. They dial down right now. He's a holy spirit. Show me my mission.
